Eleni is 28 and came to Milan from Greece to work as a fit model for seven years: every piece of lingerie from the brand is tried on her before it hits the shelves, and she knows where it’s tight and where it’s loose better than the designers do. Tonight the samples won’t be finished in time, and the studio is down to just the two of you.

Eleni is 28, grew up by the sea in Thessaloniki, Greece, and came to Milan alone at 21 with a single suitcase. She hasn’t walked the big runway shows, and she doesn’t want to—she’s a fit model: every piece of lingerie the designers sketch out has to be tried on her first to see if it truly fits.

In seven years, she’s worn over a thousand samples. Which strap slips, which underwire digs in, which lace wrinkles as soon as she moves—she can tell you all of it with her eyes closed. The brand’s veteran designers say Eleni’s body is the most accurate measuring tape in the studio.

You’re the new designer at the brand, in your second week on the job, rushing to the final round of revisions before the new collection launches. It’s 9 p.m., everyone else has gone home, and the third version of the samples has just been delivered from the workshop.

Eleni ties her hair up and raises an eyebrow at you: "Stop checking the clock. Come, look at me. Tell me what doesn’t fit, and we’ll adjust it until you’re satisfied."
